I believe they would have procured his dismissal ifthe Department had not sent you over to inquire into it, and if you hadnot been so kindly disposed and helpful to him. Nora (takes her hand out of his and goes to the opposite sideof the Christmas Tree). How hot it is in here; and I have such a lotto do.

(Holds out his hands toher.) That is why my sweet little Nora must promise me not to pleadhis cause. Give me your hand on it. Come, come, what is this? There now, that's settled.

No one to work for, and yet obliged to be always on thelook-out for chances. One must live, and so one becomes selfish. Whenyou told me of the happy turn your fortunes[pg 19]have taken—you will hardly believe it—I was delighted not so much onyour account as on my own. Well, I had to turn my hand to anything I couldfind—first a small shop, then a small school, and so on.

In this ending, Nora is led to her children after having argued with Torvald. Seeing them, she collapses, and as the curtain is brought down, it is implied that she stays. Toldeo recently told Architectural Digest that dollhouse-making has been a passion of his since he was a child and found a copy of Nutshell News dollhouse magazine in a doctor’s office.

(Takes various things out of the box.) Doctor Rank, comeand sit down here, and I will show you something. Mrs. Linde (sewing). So you are going to be dressed uptomorrow, Nora. I will tell you what—I shall come in for a moment andsee[pg 52]you in your fine feathers. But I have completely forgotten to thank youfor a delightful evening yesterday.

I know that what you did, youdid out of love for me. Helmer (walking about the room). What a horribleawakening!

University protests dominate media coverage, obscuring the true horror of Gaza war

He’ll finally command respect, and have an income, and he, his model wife, and their three model children will bask under blue skies, and nothing but, from now on. On the other hand, earlier in that scene, there was a dramaturgical advantage in the way Ibsen removed Torvald from the stage as he read the shocking letter that revealed Nora’s past sins. In “Nora,” Torvald absorbs the complicated contents of the letter and starts berating Nora, in full view of the audience, all within a few seconds. He must have taken a speed-reading course. This scene was already awkward, with its two contradictory missives from the same source, but Bergman’s adaptation makes it even bumpier. In “A Doll’s House,” no one is what they seem, so the task Brandt handles with restraint and nuance is keeping each actor from tipping his or her hand too soon.

I did it foryour sake, and this is how you repay me. Helmer (walking up and down). He has so grown into ourlives. I can't think of him as having gone out of them. He, with hissufferings and his loneliness, was like a cloudy background to oursunlit happiness.

Goin now, you look half frozen. There is some hot coffee for you on the stove. RANK.Yes, he has some sort of appointment there. Healthy natures areleft out in the cold.

HELMER.No, I am sure of that; besides, you gave me your word— [Going up toher.] Keep your little Christmas secrets to yourself, my darling. They willall be revealed tonight when the Christmas Tree is lit, no doubt. NORA.[speaking quickly]. You might give me money, Torvald. Only just as muchas you can afford; and then one of these days I will buy something with it.

Certainly I knew we should not have him very long with us.But so soon! And so he hides himself away like a wounded animal. RANK.At the next fancy-dress ball I shall be invisible.

NORA.Then you must be my witness, that it is not true, Christine. I am not out of mymind at all; I am in my right senses now, and I tell you no one else has knownanything about it; I, and I alone, did the whole thing. NORA.I am not speaking of what I owe you. Tell me what sum you are asking my husbandfor, and I will get the money.

Nora necessarily occupies the center of this new drama. It would be easier for Sisyphus to bounce that boulder up to the summit than an offender to return to grace. And even for those tiptoeing the straight and narrow path, upward mobility is as difficult as melting granite.

In contrast to his physical illness, he says that the man in the study, Krogstad, is "morally diseased". The director, David Thacker, working from a translation by Joan Tindale, doesn’t appear to have cut the play at all. The running time, almost 2 1/2 hours of dramatic text, is long by television standards, but the cumulative weight of the production justifies every minute. I know I shall often think of you and the children and this house. I will have them sent afterme.

Krogstad enters, and Nora tells the children to go to their nursemaid and not tell anyone about Krogstad’s visit. It is revealed that Krogstad is the person who Nora borrowed money from. He explains that he is being fired by Torvald, and that Nora must stop this happening or else Krogstad will tell everyone her secret. He adds that he has evidence that Nora forged her father’s signature in an IOU. Krogstad exits, and Torvald returns. Nora tries to persuade him not to fire Krogstad, but is unable to.
